Have You Outgrown Your Wardrobe

Our bodies are constantly evolving as we go about life, so it’s only natural that what suits us one year may look and feel completely different the next. Outgrowing the clothes in your closet, both physically and emotionally, is something we all face — and it’s an opportunity to breathe new life into your closet.

Pair it up

One good way to see if a particular clothing item belongs in your closet is to try and match it up with at least three other items you have. This is a rough guide that doesn’t account for pieces like your long evening gowns, but this can help you see whether your clothes can go together (and thus minimize clutter). You should be investing in pieces that you can get maximum wear out of, like J.Crew’s classic Any Day Pants that work for anyone and pair with everything you already have in your closet. Keeping this rule in mind whenever you shop helps you gravitate towards items you’ll love and wear time and time again.

Return to clothes that flatter you

If “flattering” isn’t a word that comes to mind when you try on a piece of clothing, chances are it’s served you well and it’s time to move on. You should be opting for cuts and styles that really accentuate all of your body in all its wonder. Woman Within has a generous selection of dresses that cinch ever so slightly at the waist, which leads to huge payoffs in style. This gentle silhouette is perfect if you’re someone who’s easing into accentuating your waist. While there’s a time and place for straight dresses, a wardrobe overhaul presents an opportunity to pick clothes that showcase your body’s best assets.

Wear what you want

What’s a clothing item you’ve been dying to try but have always been too scared to? The fashion risks that scare us are never as bad as they seem, and the insecurities we have about ourselves are things that the average person wouldn’t even notice! Stylists at The List recommend being more deliberate with fabrics as a great first step to reinventing your look. Indeed, fabric choices are key components that often go unnoticed. Jersey, cotton, and even linen are lightweight options that beautifully drape across the body.

Take stock of what you have

Calling all compulsive shoppers: when was the last time you took stock of every item in your closet? If you’re struggling to find an answer, it’s time to get everything out again. There are a couple of ways to do this. One way is to take a cue from our post on Layering and set things according to the outfit. You can also organize all your clothes in piles according to item type, with skirts in one pile, shorts in another, and so on. This is a good way to literally see what you already have, which can then help you determine what’s worth keeping and what you should probably replace — if you’re thinking about replacing something, keep the previous tips in mind!

Your clothes are meant to be a reflection of you, which means they’re meant to make you feel good. It’s normal to outgrow certain items; at the end of the day, always remember that clothes are meant to fit you and not the other way around!
